Young hill runners to race International Youth Cup in Spain

Thursday 20th June 2024

Young hill runners compete for Scotland this weekend at the International Youth Cup.

The annual U18 Mountain Cup takes place in Montaña Palentina in Spain on Saturday.

Young mountain runners from Europe and beyond will tackle the challenge of a 6k course which features 290m ascent/descent.

scottishathletics are delighted this year to give an international opportunity to eight young Scottish hill runners to race in Spain.

In previous years, this selection has been six athletes but such is the depth in our age group hill running that scottishathletics were keen to expand the opportunity and feel it is appropriate in terms of performances at the trials.

Scotland teams:

Elsa McGregor (Edinburgh AC), Ava Richardson (Gala), Jessica Taylor (Edinburgh AC), Ruth Walsh (Giffnock North)

James Alexander (Garscube), Andrew Grant (Strathearn), Rowan Taylor (Lasswade), Lachlan Thomas (Ross County)

It’s great that seven different clubs represented and indeed a spread across the length and breadth of the country from Ross County in the North to Gala Harriers in the Borders

Congratulations to each of these young athletes and their families and coaches on being selected for Scotland and good luck for the races on Saturday.

With thanks to Angela Mudge
