The sun shone on Battery Park, Greenock for the return of the Tru Wealth Young Athletes’ Road Races on Sunday.

And while the Covid-forced hiatus in 2021 might have spelled disruption in the continuity of the event, there was certainly some continuity in the junior endurance results, as Giffnock North swept the board to take all six team titles – just three weeks after achieving the same result at the Lindsays National XC in Falkirk.

The individual wins were by a wider spread of clubs, with Garscube Harriers taking two titles (Erin Burnett U13 and Louisa Brown U17) and one apiece for East Kilbride (Angus Wilkinson, U13), Ross County (Caitlyn Heggie, U15), Kilbarchan (Oliver Patton, U15) and Dundee Hawkhill (Warren Lorente, U17).

Of the 18 youngsters to take to the individual podiums, fully half had also been among the top three in their race at the National XC.

For Louisa Brown and Angus Wilkinson, it was a win both times. Also back on the podium, albeit in different orders this time around, were Eilidh Dallas, Howie Allison, Caitlyn Heggie, Freya Campbell, Oliver Patton, Hannah Ryding and Warren Lorente.

It was superb to see such consistency among these young athletes when it comes to racing.

But there were also great signs of depth across the club community, with no fewer than 16 different clubs taking home medals from their day out in Inverclyde.

Huge thanks to everyone who contributed to the day, particularly our hosts Inverclyde Local Athletic Partnership and event partners Tru Wealth; all the officials and volunteers who worked so hard on the day; and of course all the athletes and their coaches and supporters.
