Five Scottish athletes have been named by British Athletics for the European Indoors.
The event will take place over three days in Torun in Poland at the end of next week from March 5-7.
And Neil Gourley (1500m), Guy Learmonth (800m), Andy Butchart (3000m) have been picked for individual events and and Zoey Clark and Beth Dobbin are with the Women’s 4c400m squad.
Well done to all five athletes and their coaches and families on these selections for the event in Torun.
scottishathletics also takes this opportunity to acknowledge the important development work at club level over many years which has helped these athletes reach this level of international athletics – Giffnock North (Neil), Lasswade AC (Guy), Central AC (Andy), Aberdeen AAC (Zoey) and Edinburgh AC (Beth).
British Athletics named 41 athletes in total for the European Indoors and noted that there may be some other ‘wild-card’ invitations from European Athletics, too.
UKA said: ‘As per selection policy, due to the limited qualification opportunities as a result of Covid-19, European Athletics (EA) have amended their qualification process to allow nomination of unqualified field athletes for selection to the Technical Delegates.
‘British Athletics have notified the athletes who have been nominated under this rule and European Athletics will confirm on 25 February whether or not the nominations have been accepted and these will be published soon after.’
Olympic Head Coach at British Athletics, Christian Malcolm, said: ‘I’m pleased to be selecting such a strong Great Britain and Northern Ireland team for the European Indoor Championships next month.
‘It has been a challenging time for all athletes and coaches recently, but we have seen some incredible performances.
‘Of course, we are looking to maximise the number of opportunities to win medals, but it is also about providing opportunities for developing athletes as well as established athletes to achieve a GB and NI vest.’
Delighted to be selected for my 4th European Indoors. Working hard to bring home the bacon this time around 🥓 Now just praying my best pal gets selected come Thursday🤞🏼🤞🏼 https://t.co/Y1Q7KPql2p
