The Scottish ultra running community will be watching events in Italy this weekend at the European 24-Hour Champs.

There are three Scottish athletes in Verona with the GB and NI team – James Stewart has plenty of experience at these champs but it is a first selection for the European 24-Hour for Joasia Zakrzewski and Jo Newens.

Athletes will race from 10am on Saturday through to 10am on Sunday and unfortunately the local weather forecast isn’t too kind, with thunderstorms and heavy rain expected.

The British team numbers 12 athletes in total and hopes are high among the travelling party for strong team performances.

‘We were in a great position to select a strong team for the IAU 24-Hour European Championships,’ said Team Leader John Pares.

‘We’ve finished on the podium as a team at previous editions of the event, so we’ll be targeting that again, and individually we have some athletes who could also be challenging the best on the continent.’

Callum Hawkins is back in race action again this weekend as the double Olympian continues his return towards full fitness.

The Scottish Marathon Record holder takes on the half distance for the second time in a few weeks as he competed in Denmark in the Copenhagen Half Marathon (on Sunday morning and shown on Vinco).

Callum recently won the Paisley 10k with 30:15 and then had a 64:02 time when running in the Antrim Coast Half Marathon.
