Scottish U18 Records fall and Alistair lands European silver in Italy

The next generation of Scottish track and field athletes was well represented at the European U18 Champs in Italy.

And the seven strong cohort with the GB and NI team in Rieti did not disappoint – as they delivered a series of fine performances.

It was a highly encouraging championships for our National Academy, too, with a number of the athletes currently on that programme.

Alistair Street came up with a memorable medal moment towards the end of the champs as he took silver on Sunday afternoon.

It was a GB 1-2 in the Men’s 1500m in fact with the Kilbarchan AAC athlete home in second in 3:56.80 with his GB team-mate, Freddie Rowe, landing gold.

Elsewhere, there was a string of Scottish U18 Records.

Combined Events athlete Douglas Knox was in medal contention for two days before he finished fourth in the decathlon. The Springburn Harrier tallied 7255 points to break his own Scottish U18 mark.

Making it a CE double, Dionne Maguinness took down the U18 Record in the Women’s heptathlon. The Airdrie Harrier finished in sixth place with 5521 points after a series of PB performances.

Leanna Elliot was a top ten finisher in that event as the Cumbernauld AAC athlete tallied 5379 points.

Hammer thrower Sophie Robertson had kick-started the run of Scottish U18 Records in her qualifying round last Thursday. Sophie broke that in the final on two occasions with her best at 65.25m. Sophie finished fifth in what was a really strong Women’s hammer competition.

Rhian Mitchell made his GB debut in the shot with the Kilmarnock Harrier throwing 16.29m in qualifying. Aaron Reid of Giffnock North AC clocked 5:58.56 in his 2000m steeplechase race.
