Andy Butchart claimed the British title at the Night of the 10,000m PBs amid a raucous atmosphere at Highgate.

The Central AC athlete was only 11 seconds away from his own Scottish Record over the distance on the track.

In a remarkable race, Andy came through to take the UK title, with Zakariya Mahamed (Southampton) and Ellis Cross (Aldershot, Farnham and District) taking the silver and bronze medals.

Butchart went off hard in the early stages and reaped the rewards of that push to comfortably cross the line as the first Briton in a time of 27:47.43, in 10th place overall.

Two-time Olympic medallist Paul Chelimo (USA) won the race by a near 20 second margin with a time of 27:12.73.

Andy, whose Scottish Record is 27:36.77 from last year, certainly entered into the spirit of the evening as he grabbed a can of beer in the home straight and charged through the final metres swigging it to the delight of trackside fans.

‘If we did any other discipline in athletics (like this) it would take off,’ he said.

In the Women’s championships race there was a solid PB performance from Alice Goodall. The GB cross country and hills international from Edinburgh Uni Hare and Hounds clocked 32:29.71.

Also at the Highgate meet, there was a Commonwealth Youth Games standard over 800m for Caleb Macleod. The Pitreavie AAC athlete clocked 1:51.96.
