Athletics says thank you – #BecauseYouPlay

Friday 8th November 2019

scottishathletics has joined other sports across the country in saying a huge “Thank you” to everyone who plays The National Lottery, for helping provide vital funds to boost the sport over the past 25 years.

CEO Mark Munro has written an open letter of thanks to The National Lottery players, published today on the sportscotland website. He notes that in the last four years alone,The National Lottery has enabled match funding of around £16 million into athletics facilities in Scotland, and writes:

“Because people like you play The National Lottery, the sport of athletics in Scotland has been able to support athletes, volunteers, clubs, officials, and we have also been able to invest in the building of new facilities as well as the upgrade and renovation of many more.

“In particular, the increased opportunities provided at a local level have enabled thousands of new people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities to participate in athletics and running opportunities. The system of athletics clubs have developed numerous community projects that have targeted those who do not normally have the opportunity, including those from BME communities, disabled participants, those from low family incomes, plus the young and old alike.

“Hundreds of Scottish athletes and coaches have also benefitted to the point where Scottish athletes have become some of the most successful in the world which is fantastic. The ability to provide crucial funding, support services and competition travel support has enabled them to progress to Olympic medal standards.”

The thank you comes as part of this year’s 25th anniversary celebrations for The National Lottery, being marked on social media with the hashtags #NationalLottery25 and #BecauseYouPlay.
