Commonwealth Youth games – Trinbago 2023

Two members of scottishathletics staff are to join our young athletes at the seventh Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinidad & Tobago this summer, after being named team staff members for athletics.

Coaching Coordinator/National Throws Coordinator Alison Grey, and Performance Coordinator/ National Jumps and Combined Events Coordinator, Allan Hamilton, will join Team Scotland for the Trinbago 2023 Youth Games from 4-11 August.

It’s an appointment that brings a great sense of history and continuing tradition for both.

‘I am honoured and excited to be selected as one of the athletics team managers for the Youth Commonwealth Games,’ said Allan.

‘It’s a great opportunity to be able to support a group of exceptional young athletes in their sporting journey.

‘But it is also quite personal and significant to me, as I am following in my grandmother’s footsteps – she team managed the Commonwealth Games teams in 1966 Kingston, Jamaica and the 1970 games in Edinburgh, Scotland.’

Similarly, Alison herself competed in the Commonwealth Games in Victoria, Canada in 1994, where she finished seventh in shot put.

‘I am honoured and proud to be asked to support our next generation of talented young athletes almost 30 years since I had the privilege of competing at a Commonwealth Games (back in 1994),’ said Alison.

‘Thanks to Commonwealth Games Scotland for the opportunity and invaluable experience this opportunity will provide.’

Also on the staff team will be long jumper Gillian Cooke as Head of Media. Gillian competed at the first Commonwealth Youth Games in Edinburgh in 2000.

Welcoming the staff to Team Scotland, Chef de Mission Chris Purdie said:  ‘I am delighted to announce the appointment of our core and sport specific staff.

‘We have brought together a fantastic group of individuals who are well-placed to deliver a positive environment for our young athletes at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinidad and Tobago.

‘I am looking forward to working with so many talented individuals on what I am sure will be an incredible experience for both athletes and staff.’
