There was no stopping the young runners from Giffnock North AC at Callendar Park on Saturday, as the club took all six of the team titles among the youngest three age groups at the Lindsays National XC.

In addition to victories for both male and female teams at U13, U15 and U17, Giffnock also scooped two gold and two silver medals in the individual races – Freya Campbell and Craig Shennan topping the podium at U15 while Reuben McDonald and Hannah Ryding each took silver at U17.

‘We are delighted and trying to win all six was something we had in mind as a target,’ said Giffnock coach Dudley Walker.

‘Our young athletes and their coaches and parents put in an awful lot of work through the year so they deserve their moment at Falkirk.

‘We do place an emphasis on the Lindsays National XC and while we know at Giffnock we’ve lots of young athletes, we would like to think there is quality as well as quantity.’

But it was far from a ‘one club day,’ with medals wending their way home to locations as far-flung as Dingwall (Caitlin Heggie of Ross County AC taking bronze in the U15 Girls) – and the Borders (Moorfoot Runners picking up two U15 Boys bronzes – both the team medal and individual for Kieran Fulton; Gala Harriers taking bronze in the U13G team race.).

There was evidence of recent track success transferring well to the muddy fields of Falkirk: The U17 Men’s title was taken by Corey Campbell of Team East Lothian, fresh from a superb indoor season which culminated in a new Scottish Indoor U17 Record at 3000m set just over a week ago at the Emirates Arena.

Eilidh Dallas of Strathearn Harriers last weekend stepped up an age group to take the U15 1500m indoor title at the Emirates, and this weekend was back on the podium, with a silver in the U13 individual race.
