Young athletes enjoy 4J SUPERteams – and YPF duo help our Officials

The Ayrshire Athletics Arena played host to our key development event of the outdoor season – as clubs converged on Kilmarnock for our 4J SUPERteams National Final.

Around 300 athletes in the U12 age bracket were given the chance to compete across four disciplines as they tried out a run, a jump, a throw and a relay.

The format is geared to promote enjoyment, team spirit and inspire our young athletes and the enthusiasm was there for all to see on Saturday.

Athletes compete in teams of four, scoring points for their club, and this time our scorers feature table for boys teams, girls teams and the overall outcome.

As always, we say a huge thanks to all team managers, parents and volunteers from our clubs as well as our dedicated team of scottishathletics Officials, whose support and guidance is much appreciated.

The top three teams in each category were:

Girls: Airdrie Harriers D, Pitreavie AAC A, Springburn Harriers A

Boys: Harmeny A, Central AC A, Giffnock North A

On these occasions, we would stress that SUPERteams is about much more than podium places and medals, with the emphasis very much on helping many of the youngest athletes at our clubs develop.

The next step on the competition pathway would be competing at our U13 National Champs.

The enjoyment and interest generated is reflected across social media, particularly on club channels, and it was great to see Harmeny AC and Shettleston Harriers celebrating a composite team entry rather than have youngsters unable to compete.

Airdrie and Cumbernauld also made up a composite team, again making sure young athletes were able to take part, make friends and develop via different disciplines.

As Shettleston’s Tweet (see above) noted: ‘Putting the team into SUPERteams.’

Naideen Dailly and Erin Quinn at the Ayrshire Athletics Arena

Two of our Young People’s Forum members helped out at the 4J Studios SUPERteams National Final held in Kilmarnock as they gained an insight to being an Official.

Naideen Dailly (North Ayrshire AC) and Erin Quinn (VP Glasgow) were at Kilmarnock on Saturday and enjoyed their learning curve.

Erin and Naideen had the chance to assist the Assembly Team in the morning by helping to gather the athletes together for their heats and taking them out to their events. This was a great opportunity for them as this also gave them an insight into how this part of events work.

In the afternoon, they went on to help with Field events.

‘I had such an amazing day today helping with the Super Teams,’ said Erin. ‘I’m so thankful that I have been able to have this opportunity through the Young Peoples Forum, thank you everyone.’

Naideen said: ‘It was a great day and I learned an awful lot about what Officials do and some of the process behind making an event happen. Thanks to all the amazing Officials that helped us out and made us feel welcome.’

Technical Official, Isobel Martin, said: ‘Erin and Naideen were great assets to us at assembly, I was grateful for their assistance.

‘It was good to let them see what Officials do in different roles. As it happened, I’d have been lost without them and the other helpers at SUPERteams.’ Delivering events is always a team effort.’
