Results: Gateshead Diamond League
Andy Butchart came up with a fine performance at the Gateshead Diamond League to improve his own mark in the 3000m.
A solid third place in a fast race saw him clock 7:35.18 and improve on his previous best of 7:37.56 set in London four years ago.
The race itself was a real battle at the front between Australian Stewart McSweyn and Spaniard Mohamed Katir. Katir duly won it with a Spanish National Record of 7:27.64.
Congratulations to Andy, his family and his coaching team on a fine Scottish Record performance.
Jake Wightman had to settle for fourth place in the Emsley Carr Mile.
The Scot, who won this event in 2017, clocked 3:55.78 after being overhauled on the closing lap – with Elliot Giles and Jake Heyward producing a terrific battle to the line.
Giles took the verdict by just one hundredth of a second in 3:52.49. Heyward’s 3:52.50 was a Welsh Record.

Beth Dobbin featured in a high class 200m race and finished in fifth place in 22.92. The race was won by Jamaica’s Elaine Thompson-Herah in 22.43. Beth was also involved in a 4x100m GB team who finished second to Holland.
Nicole Yeargin took her Diamond League bow after silver at the British Champs recently and finished in fifth place with 51.77 in a race won by Stephenie Ann McPherson in 50.44.
Zoey Clark took second place in the Women’s 400m B race as she clocked 52.13 seconds with Emily Diamond taking the win in 51.89. Both are in the GB 4x400m Relay squad for the Olympics.
Ross Paterson picked up a fine PB in a mixed classification Para 400m race which featured T20/T38/T47 athletes. Ross took sixth place with that run of 54.77, finishing just behind fifth-placed Alexander Thomson, who clocked 54.53.
