Jemma lands brilliant 5th Avenue Course Record – Melanie Great North win

Jemma Reekie claimed the third 5^th Avenue Mile title of her career in New York on Sunday.

And the redoubtable Scot,  in fine form on the roads over the past coupe of weeks, did so with a New Course Record for the famous American race.

Jemma was clocked at 4:13.8 on the 5^th Avenue Mile route – faster than her  European Reocrd set a week earlier in Germany.

None other than Laura Muir held the Course Record prior to that with 4:14.8 – held jointly with Karissa Schweizer.

The New York course is deemed downhill by nine metes and this not eligible for wider Record purposes.

Jemma won the race in 2021 and 2023 and pulled ahead just after halfway to post a really dominant victory. Fellow Scot Sarah Calvert was 12^th in 4:25.

Melanie Woods was a star at the Commonwealth Games with double gold in the wheelchair track events,

And the top Scottish Para athlete took that form to the roads to win the Women’s race at the Great North Run.

Melanie raced with the men and finished eighth overall as she clocked a performance of 50.19 for the half marathon course.

The Red Star AC athlete, who is coached by Rodger Harkins, then shared the podium photos with men’s winner, David Weir,

Andy Butchart went sub 63 minutes in his second half marathon in eight days. Andy clocked 62.59 at the Great North.

It was a tough and frustrating day for Eilish McColgan, however.

Unfortunately Eilish had to DNF after suffering a foot problem similar to the London Marathon when she suffered blisters and a toe issue.
