Two Native Records on the final morning at Scotstoun

It was a solid morning from the Scots on the final day of competition at Scotstoun.

Nicole Yeargin was in action for the 400m final and out in a really strong performance, setting a new Native Record at 51.27. It had stood for 23 years since it was set by Lee McConnell in 2003, also at Scotstoun (51.58).

A really solid run in cool conditions and from an inside lane, she was in the fight to the end and was closing hard in the home straight to finish fifth. She will be looking to carry that form into this evening’s 4 x 400m Mixed Relay final.

There was also a new Native Record was the women’s 4 x 100m relay. The team of Lucy Fraser, Kaya Slater, Alyson Bell and Alisha Rees finished fourth in their heat in 44.89.

There was a nervous wait while the second heat took place, but that time was good enough to see them safely through to the evening’s final as one of the two non-automatic qualifiers.

On the prospect of racing again this evening at Scotstoun, Alyson Bell said:

‘We’ve all worked so hard this year and we just want to get out there, run fast and do everyone proud.’

Alisha Rees is the only member of the team with experience of a Commonwealth final, having competed in Birmingham four years ago .

‘Scottish sprinting is in a really good place. To make the final two games in a row shows the level of sprinting that we’ve got in Scotland right now.’

Sean Frame was in action in the T54 1500m. A tactical race, the athletes moved largely as a group through the first three laps before picking up the pace in the final 300m.

More known for racing on the road over longer distances and up against track specialists, Sean was not quite able to hold pace with the lead three athletes as they pushed away and he finished just outside the medals in fourth place (3:20.49).

A windy day at Scotstoun made for an interesting competition in the Men’s Discus. Nick Percy built himself into the competition and improved through the earlier rounds, with his third throw of 57.05m enough to see him make the top 8 for three more throws.

He continued to improve in round four and five, throwing 58.28 in the latter. Unfortunately, a foul in the final throw meant he wouldn’t improve on that and he finished seventh.
