Sad news as our athletics family mourns Sir Menzies Campbell

Sir Menzies Campbell, a 10-time Scottish champion sprinter, British record holder, Olympian and Honorary President of scottishathletics, has passed away at the age of 84.

Known as Ming and for his political life, he was awarded a life peerage in 2015, taking the name Baron Campbell of Pittenweem.

His life story will be told in the columns of the national newspapers and across BBC platforms.

From an athletics perspective, he was a Scottish champion at 100, 220 and 440 yards and a British champion at 220 yards.

He duly represented Great Britain at the 1964 Olympics and the 1966 European Championships as well as 14 other international matches, and competed for Scotland at the 1966 Commonwealth Games.

Ming was also an Honorary Life Member of scottishathletics. His athletics career is summarised in the athletes section of the scotstats website here
