Jamie Burns and Brogan Wallace stood on the start-line at the Scottish 10K Champs and joined in the minute’s applause for Scottish athletics hero Lachie Stewart.

Half an hour or so later the duo – Shettleston Harriers athletes like the late Lachie – paid their own tribute by claiming gold in Kilmarnock.

The Roon the Toon event always generates a very special atmosphere and another Sunday morning in East Ayrshire did not disappoint.

Commonwealth Games medallist Sean Frame set a Course Record in the Wheelchair race as he eyes a track appearance at Glasgow 2026 over 1500m.

Burns headed the Course Record holder Sean Chalmers as the leaders entered the track and duly won by eight seconds with a PB run of 29:41.

Wallace for her part was home in 33:35 – with a PB to savour – and it was a Shettleston 1-2 in that Women’s race with Lynn McKenna taking the silver in 34:22.

Central AC won the Men’s race from Cambuslang and host club Kilmarnock Harriers.

Cambuslang Harriers won the Women’s race from Kilmarnock and Giffnock North.

With Frame Runner Julie McElroy in action, too, there was an inclusive feel but the real glow comes from seeing runners of all ages, stages and abilities compete in a Scottish Championship event and come in from sub 30 minutes to just short of two hours. With 2700 entrants, this was by far a Record field for Roon the Toon.

Warm congratulations to event organiser Ian Gebbie, the wider team from Kilmarnock Harriers, East Ayrshire Council and whole Kilmarnock community for getting behind this ‘festival’ of 10K running.

Jamie was thrilled to win as Central AC’s Hamish Hickey took third in the Senior category with 30:03.

‘It has been an emotional week for our club with the sad passing of Lachie Stewart,’ said Jamie.

‘He is a legend of athletics in Scotland and someone I was lucky enough to meet. That was a few years ago when I was a youngster and he inspired me. It’s a sad loss but it was fitting today to pay tribute to him.’

Brogan was a local heroine with Kilmarnock Harriers her first club.

‘I am from here and it really helped me today out there running on streets I know so well and with friends and family around supporting.

‘We ran by where I live which was nice – I was with Killie Harriers from eight years old so I enjoyed being back here today.

‘It is a first Scottish title for me in my Senior years – I think maybe going back to me mid-teens I might have one from the track.

‘And it was a PB which I am delighted with.’

Sean Frame was delighted with Course Record 23:50 after clocking 24:28 here tow years ago.

‘I am pleased with that and it show how strong I am getting. I was racing on the track recently over 1500m and hoping to get into that for the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games,’ said Sean, silver medallist in Birmingham in the marathon.

John Lenehan of Edinburgh AC won the M40 Masters title with a run of 32:12. Springburn Harriers athlete Michelle Sandison flew south from Shetland and travelled home with W40 gold after her success in 36:23.

Our gold medallists in other Masters categories were as follows:
