Race beside the seaside: Silverknowes gets ready to host our Scottish 5K Champs

The Scottish 5k Champs at Silverknowes has become one of the most eagerly anticipated road races on our annual calendar.

And the 2025 edition – taking place in Edinburgh this Friday night – looks to be no exception.

Strong fields are entered at the top end of both the Men’s and Women’s race and if conditions are as favourable as in recent days then there should be some very fast times.

Competition tends to create that and even if it is a windy night the battle for medals looks intense.

Former champions are entered in terms of Seniors and there are medals, too, for individuals at U20 and in ten-year bands from v40. Team medals are on offer, too. (check the detail on the Road Running and Cross Country Commission website).

There looks to quality running through the Men’s race potential top ten. Jamie Crowe, former 5k champion and recent Flat n Fast winner, will resume his head-to-head with cross country rival, Logan Rees, but there are a number of other contenders, too.

In no particular order, it will be exciting to welcome: Ryan Thomson, Hamish Hickey, Callum Tharme, Sean Chalmers, Jamie Burns, Ben Sandilands and Taha Ghafari. Last year’s winner, Scott Stirling, races in Manchester this weekend.

The women’s division is strong as well and we expect to see former winners Lynn McKenna and Annabel Simpson on the start-line on Friday night. Annabel is a three times winner of this event.

Among others who could be in the medal hunt (and this is not necessarily comprehensive) are Brogan Wallace, Kirsty Walker and Nancy Scott.

Our team champions at Senior level in 2024 were: Cambuslang Harriers in the women’s race and Aberdeen AAC men.

Race organiser Adrian Stott and his team of volunteers always does a marvellous job in delivering this event under the auspices of Sri Chinmoy.

With a start-time of 7:30pm, athletes seeking to declare are asked to arrive as early as possible.

The venue at Silverknowes beside the Forth means car-sharing with team-mates, family members is always helpful for the overall experience for everyone.

*Friday night is the next round in our Scottish Road Race Grand Prix with shares awarded to athletes who get inside certain standards.
