Bobby Gavin’s Photos of the Year (Part One)

Photographer Bobby Gavin covers the ground for scottishathletics throughout the year – with superb pictures from all sorts of events in various disciplines.

This year, we decided to ask him to pick a dozen or so of his favourites from the past 12 months.

So here is part one of Bobby’s selection box – with comments from the man himself on why he chose a particular picture.

In fact, his first image is from five years ago at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games – read on for the explanation!

Perhaps a bit of a cheat to have two images, but the shot from Glasgow 2014 and the contrast to 2019 is the reason why I picked the press call from the Euros rather than an action shot.

They are charting the journey (thus far) of Dr Muir . . . !

The European Indoors in Glasgow were a fantastic experience and the crowd really played their part in contributing to the atmosphere.

The idea behind this shot was to capture the Emirates Arena at a major event and somehow translate all the noise and excitement into a printed image.

It was also a pleasant surprise when this photo won the Glasgow 2019 ‘Press Image of the Day’.

Just because this one always makes me smile . . .

I picked this shot because it just feels as if the athletes are enjoying the moment and perhaps starting to realise fully what they have achieved.

It is also good to see Scottish Athletics making up half of a GB Relay team.

The Lindsays National XC at Falkirk seems to have an atmosphere all of it’s own; a mix of serious racing and an end of season party.

The participation in this event is now incredible, and the charge up the hill at the start shows (in part) just how huge a day it is.
