Andrew Murphy, Holly McArthur and Joel McFarlane with GB in Spain

British Athletics website report

Three Scottish athletes represented GB and NI at the Combined Events International match in Spain as they headed to Madrid.

GB competed against multi-events from France, Poland, the Czech Republic and the hosts.

And there were very solid performances from the trio of Andrew Murphy, Joel McFarlane and Holly McArthur with Kilbarchan AAC’s Andrew in the Senior age group and Joel and Holly in the Junior age group.

Andrew, in fact, was the best-placed British athlete in the Senior Men’s event as he came up with an overall points PB for the heptathlon as he finished in 11th place.

Coached by Colin Sinclair, Andrew added 90 points to his previous best tally to reach 5492. Lifetime bests in the 60m (7.21), the 60m hurdles (8.39) and the 1000m (2.46.00) saw him improve upon his last outing – third place in the trial event in Sheffield.

It was a first international outing for Arbroath and District athlete Joel, who is coached by his dad Ian, and he finished in sixth place on 4968 points.

Gold Coast 2018-bound Holly, who is coached by Iain McEwan, was also sixth in her age group as the GB team finished in second place in their team event.

High jumper Nikki Manson has made a really good start to 2017 with some fine performances and that was under-lined by a PB in the Czech Republic over the weekend.

The Giffnock North AC athlete cleared 1.87m and had a couple of decent attempts at 1.90m. The 1.87m takes Nikki to second equal on the Scottish all-time list, level with Jayne Nisbet, with Emma Nuttall the Record holder currently at 1.88m.

Nikki competes again on Tuesday in another European event.

One week on from setting a Scottish best performance in the weight throw, Nick Percy improved that distance still further with another fine performances over the weekend in the United States.

Nick threw 20.36m last week in Lincoln but has now reached 21.00m to set a new mark in the throws event.

It was also a Nebraska University record – by a single centimetre – as he eclipsed the old record of 20.99m set by Joe Erdkamp in 1999. Percy now holds both the indoor weight throw and outdoor hammer throw school records.

Congratulations to Nick, his coach and his family on continued strong performances.

The Devil’s Burden hill relays is always a huge event and the 2018 race organised once again by Fife AC was no different.

It was a great day for Westerlands as their A team won the overall race by edging out favourites, and regular recent winners Shettleston Harriers, by a couple of minutes in an event which takes the top teams just under three hours to complete.
