Sprinter Sophie leads Sheffield medal charge for Scots with two U20 Records on busy weekend

Scottish athletes were in fine form over the weekend at the England Athletics Age Groups in Sheffield.

No fewer than 14 medals were claimed with four of those gold – two for sprinter Sophie Thomas and one each for thrower Rhian Mitchell and 1500m runner Alica Mourao.

Sophie had an amazing couple of days setting two Scottish U20 Records in the 60m and then the 200m.

Holly Whittaker took bronze in the 60m hurdles and equalled her own Scottish U20 Record with her run of 8.37 seconds.

The outstanding performances in Sheffield began on Saturday.

Sophie continued her excellent indoor season with gold in the U20 Women’s 60m – and her 7.33 time was a new Scottish U20 Record.

Similarly, young Kilmarnock athlete Cara Monachello clocked 39.19 for silver in the U18 Women’s 300m – and that is a Scottish Best for U18.

Then, on Sunday, Sophie clocked a superb 23.19 to improve the U20 Record for Women’s 200m.

Here’s the medal summary . . .

Gold (4): Sophie Thomas (2), Rhian Mitchell, Alice Mourao. Silver (4): Ella Cheshire, Leanna Elliot, Cara Monachello, Holly Whittaker. Bronze (5): Leanna Elliot, Lucas McDonald, Tyler Philip, Zoe Roberts, Holly Whittaker.

Well done to all the Scottish athletes who made the trip to Sheffield supported by family and coaches.

In America, Brodie Young and Rebecca Grieve were in superb form over 400m in New Mexico.

*Rebecca went sub 52 seconds for first time with 51.91

*Brodie was at 45.79 to lead the UK Men’s ranking

Laura Muir and Jemma Reekie were in race action in Europe, too.

Laura raced for the first time since the World Champs last summer to finish fifth in her 3000m race in Germany with 8:40.44.

Jemma, who raced the Millrose Games in New York over 1000m, had a 1500m outing and clocked 4:03.84.

And good to see Chris Bennett win Hammer comp in the north of England with 65.37m.
