There was a strong turnout of athletes for our Lindsays Masters XC at Tollcross Park in Glasgow.

In fact, around 400 finished over the hilly and muddy course at what is always a popular venue.

With a Record entry field in the Women’s race, defending champion Helen Leigh (Inverness AC) led on the first  lap just ahead of Sara Green (Gala Harriers) in what was shaping up to be a repeat of last year.

Colin Donnelly (Cambuslang) was also out to defend his title and led the 65+ Men.

After two laps Helen had forged clear, with Yvonne McNairn (Giffnock) moving into second place ahead of Green and Michelle Sanderson (Springburn), who was sitting fourth but leading the W45 category.

Darren Walker (Bellahouston) was sitting in second place in the M65.

Helen duly came through to take win (23:03) ahead of Yvonne (23:25) and Sara (23:31).

In M40-60 there was a lead group of five or six athletes after the opening lap, which had reduced to three leaders after two laps. Those men were Jim Tole (Metro Aberdeen), Iain Whitaker (Edinburgh AC), Peter Avent (Shettleston) and by the third lap it was still very close.

At the finish, Dermot Cummins (Corstorphine) had moved into the lead but took the wrong route. Avent was first over the line (27:16) closely followed by Whittaker and Cummins, who he had waited at the finish for.

Tole took M50 title finishing an impressive fourth overall.
