Giffnock North used their social media on Sunday morning to share an image of Alyson Bell running relays as an U13 athlete.

The post was to wish teams luck for the 4J National Relays in Dundee – with a brilliant 211 teams entered from across our clubs.

Giffnock’s ‘pathway’ example was perfectly timed with GB and Scotland international Alyson involved the previous day as a Scotland Women’s 4x100m posted the second fastest time ever and a Commonwealth Games qualifying standard.

The Regional Performance Centre in Dundee is the kind of venue where that journey starts for some athletes while for others enjoying the moment is enough. And there was a whole lot of that happening on Sunday.

Despite one or two technical issues, the atmosphere was good and as finalists took to the track through the afternoon  they were met with a raucous reception.

The Women’s 4x100m podium with VP-Glasgow landing the golds

At Senior level, there was a double double as VP-Glasgow won both the Women’s 4x100m and 4x400m finals and Edinburgh AC did likewise in the Men.

The VP-Glasgow team of Anna Cameron, Zoe Wilson, Chloe Lambert and Lorne Kerr won the one-lap race in 48.11 with silvers for host club Dundee Hawkhill and bronzes for Falkirk Victoria.

Remarkably, the trio of Wilson, Lambert and Kerr all raced again in the 4x400m final and, joined by Erin Partridge, won in 3:58.20 from Pitreavie AAC and Glasgow Uni.

Edinburgh AC’s winning lineup in the 4x100m final featured Alexander Poustie-Williamson, Samuel Okpaje, Methembe Ndlovu and Omar Bajo as they clocked 42.24. Law and District AAC were second and Shettleston third.

In the longer race, the EAC trio of Bradley Francis, Ewan Purves and Calum Murrow gave Bajo a slight lead over Pitreavie AAC but he had to work hard to hold off Caleb McLeod to secure a second set of golds in 3:19.10. Pitreavie were at 3:19.36. Dundee were third.

Sisters Caitlin and Kirsty Purcell were joined by Charlotte Grace Clare in the Edinburgh Uni Hare and Hounds team that won the Women#s 3x800m final in 7:01.39. Central’s anchor leg helped them to silvers with Edinburgh AC in third.

One of the stories of the day emerged in the Men’s 3x800m final.

Cambuslang Harriers were seeking a third successive title here but lost out to a fine effort by Cumbernauld AAC via the runs of U23 Calum Mackenzie, M35 David Scott and U20 Grant McEachern. Cumbernauld clocked 5:46.75. Cambuslang were second and Falkirk were third.

‘I’m a Masters athlete at 37 and had my three kids here watching today so it is a special moment to top the podium with the two younger lads,’ said David.

‘I’ve never won anything like this but it was our day and that’s the beauty of this sport.’

Our Men’s 3x800m podium with Cumbernauld AAC taking the gold medals

At U17 level, there were wins for Giffnock in the Men’s 4x400m final and Aberdeen AAC in the Women’s 4x300m.

At U15 level, the 4x100m finals were won by Aberdeen in the Boys and Kilmarnock Harriers in the Girls. The Girls Medley honours went to North Ayrshire AC, and to Falkirk Victoria Harriers for the Boys.

At U13 level, Ayr Seaforth won the Girls Medley and Harmeny won the Boys Medley.

Lasswade AAC won the U17 Women’s 3x800m and Cambuslang Harriers won the U17 Men’s 3x800m.

Huge well done to all our medallists in Dundee and indeed to all teams competing. Big thank you, as always, to our dedicated team of scottishathletics Officials for their hard work to deliver events.
