Coach Douglas Cameron (4kg Hammer) Women U17 – A special Award for a brave young lady who has overcome serious injury this year to come back when perhaps others wouldn’t and still manage to add 5m to her PB taking her to 48.97m for a seriously limited season. In March this year she suffered a compound fracture of the arm when the wire snapped on her hammer when training, leaving her with her arm in a cast for 3 months. Despite this setback she began her season on 28 June when lots of youngsters having done the Schools comps were winding down or going on their holidays. Well Done Heather Fawcett. Coach Jim Green and Jill Fawcett (4kg Hammer) Women U20 Discus – Another special award with yet another tale of woe. In Spring this year this athlete had surgery for a badly damaged Anterior Cruciate Ligament on her right leg. For those that are not familiar with this it is quite often called the footballers injury. It is the ligament that sabalises the knee. With a PB of 44.09 as an U17 last season she should have had ambitions to compete at this years European U20 Championships. Instead she was left with her leg in a cast for three months. Again at an age when some athletes might just have decided to quit she fought back through intensive re hab determined to make an appearance before the end of the season. She opened her season in mid August at Aberdeen in the Senior Championships where she finished in Silver medal position behind 8 times Champion Kirsty Law. She went on the following week to Grangemouth where she took the U20 Title. A great example to our younger athletes Dione Milne. Coach Colin McCulloch (1kg Discus) SPECIAL ACHIEVEMENT AWARD (£50 Voucher) George Evans. George had made his targets this season the World Youth Games and the Commonwealth Youth Games. His further aim was to make the Final in both. Competing at the first 2 GP meets George gained the Selection standards for both, and went on to secure his Selection at the English U20 Championships. In July he competed for Great Britain in the World Youth Championships in Columbia. He threw an automatic qualifying standard Over 57.5m in the Qualifying rounds. Going into the final Ranked 6 in the World in Discus he threw over 60m in the 2nd round which was good enough to take Bronze Medal. This weekend he is in Samoa with Team Scotland at the Commonwealth Youth Games the latest news we have is that overnight, George added Silver to the Bronze he collected at the World Youth Games.
