It was a very welcome addition to the track and field calendar in Scotland a few years ago – and now the Monument Mile Classic is set for another big night.

Friday afternoon and evening will see up to 375 athletes contest 29 mile races over the Stirling University track in the shadow of the Wallace Monument with fast times expected in the elite races.

This represents the fifth staging of the Monument Mile and the event continues to grow year on year with features this Friday set to include finish line flames and online video coverage.

And there’s some significant prize-money up for grabs for the top three men and women as well as within a Scottish Students Mile Champs category.

In the elite races, the 1-2-3 will collect £250, £150 and £75.

In addition, there is a bonus pot of £250 to be shared by all male athletes who break the male course record (3:59.36 from 2020) and £250 to be shared by all female athletes who break the current female course record (4:44.87 from 2020).

Scottish Student Sport have granted championship status with medals for individuals and teams for those at universities and colleges.

The 1-2-3 will receive prizes from Sportshoes.com via vouchers worth £250, £150 and £75. There is a team prize for the combined time for two male and two female athletes.

Organiser Michael Wright highlighted a couple of other points.

‘We are excited to announce that we have arranged for flame pyrotechnics to be added to the home straight,’ said Michael.

‘The event is a UKA Level 2 event, and all times recorded will be added to Power of 10 athlete profiles. In the event of some tight finishes, we will be employing photo finish technology.

‘Our first race will commence at 4:51pm, with the last two going off around 9.20pm and 9.30pm. We are also delighted to have wheelchair racing back for another year.

‘A huge thank you must also go from the Monument Mile Classic to our generous sponsors GSS Developments, Watts Group Limited and Sportsshoes.com as well as our team of volunteers and scottishathletics Officials.’
