Olympian Callum Hawkins had the fastest lap in the men's race at 11.01 while Morag MacLarty's fastest lap of 13.18 secured silver medals for Central AC over the last couple of strides. GOOD LUCK to all the Scots in Perth, Australia, for the World Masters Champs. Looks like no fewer than 30 SVHC athletes set to compete alongside other Brits Down Under. Would doubt if we will be able to keep giving updates on performances on here so would recommend the SVHC page as a good starting point for that kind of info. Thanks. WORLD MASTERS CHAMPIONSHIPS - PERTH, AUSTRALIA
Thirty SVHC athletes will make the long journey "down under" to compete in the 22nd World Masters Athletic Championships. The global event, which will see the SVHC athletes don the Great Britain kit to compete at various locations in Perth from 26th October to 6th November.
The first day will see no fewer than 15 athletes competing with first up being Ken Moncrieff (Falkirk) in the M55 Decathlon where he will be hoping to fair better than Lyon last year where he had an altercation with the High Jump Bar and had to retire from the competition. The first day also sees the Cross Country event take place with 14 Scots entered. Ian Williams (Teviotdale) makes his debut in the M40s whilst in the M55s Colin Feechan (Cambuslang) will look to add another medal to the Gold he won in the Team Competition in last year's championships in Lyon. The M60s event sees regulars John Denholm (Falkirk) and Archie Jenkins (Cambuslang), who will also be carrying out Team Manager duties, compete alongside debutant Paul Thompson (Cambuslang). The M65s will have Alex Sutherland (Inverness), who finished a creditable 9th in Lyon last year and picked up Team Silver, along with Norman Baillie (Garscube) who has already competed at the European Road Race Championships earlier this year.
The Women's event sees Claire Thompson (Victoria Park Glasgow), recently shortlisted for "Master of the Year" going in the W35s. In the W50s race, Edinburgh AC colleagues Sue Ridley, a multi medallist in various disciplines from Cross Country, Track, Road and Mountains, and Sharyn Ramage, who picked up Gold at the European XC Relays earlier in the year, will both be looking to add to their collection. The W55s will have regulars Caroline Lawless (Falkirk) and Lynne Marr (Cambuslang) looking to run well to push them into contention for team medals. The W60s sees another debutant, Janette Fellowes (Helensburgh) whilst in the W65s, Janette Stevenson (Falkirk), a previous World Champion, will be looking to add to the medals she won at this year's European Road Race Championships in Portugal.
The rest of the team will be made up of a number regulars including sprinters William Skinner (Aberdeen) and Bob Douglas (Harmeny) who will both be looking to shine and hopefully stake a claim for Relay medals. The middle distance sees Andrew Ronald, Alex Bryce (both Falkirk) and, Francis Cannon (Teviotdale) all looking to regain form that they have shown in previous championships. In the Decathlon, Eddie McKenzie (Aberdeen), a regular at recent International events, will be looking to improve on last year's performance in Lyon.
There are also a number of athletes making their debut at this level, with the Half Marathon seeing Mark Simpson (WA) going on the last day of the championships along with Michael Craig (Victoria Park Glasgow) and Debbie Savage (Helensburgh) in the Marathon.
Husband and wife team of Benjamin and Phyllis Hands (Motherwell), and Julie Wilson (Inverness) go in the middle distance.
Finally, the sprints sees debuts for Neil Young (Leven), Brendan Lynch (Falkirk) and last but not least, the baby of the squad, Jane Scott (Victoria Park Glasgow).
