Masters athletes will gather in force at Dean Castle Country Park in Kilmarnock on Saturday for the annual XC champs.

With the Masters track and field championships the following day at the Emirates Arena, it is a hectic weekend but the growth of the sport in this area will still be exemplified .

There are 506 names on the entry lists for Kilmarnock and that is the second biggest tally in 20 years of collecting this data from the Masters XC.

Dundee last year was very popular indeed, with 591 entrants, but Saturday’s figure is significantly up on two previous visits to Kilmarnock for the event – with 361 entries in 2015 and 389 in 2012.

And it is good to see that the Women’s races on Saturday have 144 names – not far off the record  160 last year with Dundee arguably less of a journey for athletes from  many of the North and East clubs.

Start-lists are online on our Events section:

(*Please note we have been up-dating on a daily basis the list of those who have renewed memberships that were due to expire at the end of January).

The event programme is split into two races – with all women and men from V65 and above running 6k and the men M40 to M60 taking on 8k.

Women and Men V65 and above: 1pm

Men in age groups M40 to M60: 1.45pm.

Declarations close half an hour before each of these two races.

Thanks in advance to all athletes for their entries and indeed to those officials and volunteers who will be on duty on Saturday.

Kilmarnock Harriers have once again taken on the responsibility of hosting a significant event and we’re aware their team has been working really hard over the past couple of weeks preparing the courses at Dean Castle Country Park.
