Sportshall

The Sportshall primary programme is a fun and inclusive opportunity for children to get active, while providing introductory experiences of the athletics community.

The programme can be implemented within primary schools to:

  • Give children a positive first experience of competition in a fun and encouraging environment
  • Support and diversify existing PE and physical activity sessions
  • Develop fundamental movement skills and confidence to support lifelong participation in physical activity
  • Implement physical literacy and holistic play practices
  • Develop and improve team work, communication and leadership skills
  • Support inclusive participation with large teams of children (up to 30) taking part together in a celebratory environment
  • Promote local physical activity delivery through a programme of interactive cluster schools events
  • Provide opportunities for schools to participate in local authority and regional competition events
  • Increase partnership working with local and national governing bodies to support ongoing sport development i.e. Active Schools, Scottish Athletics
  • Connect schools with local athletics club networks to support the range of opportunities available for children to be active within the community

Standard competition formats in Scotland are recommended for primary 6 and 7 children, and this year, the programme will introduce children in primary 4 and 5 levels to the Regional Finals.

Sportshall provides engaging opportunities for dynamic teams of children to represent their school and region in a fun and celebratory environment. The focus of sportshall is placed firmly on having fun, achieving your personal best and the importance of working together to support your team mates.

Events are organised across local authorities leading to the Regional Finals which take place between February and March each year.
