Black-Shields Rankings
The Black-Shields Rankings The ranking system, covering the top 100 male and females combined, is based on an athlete's best five performances over a rolling 12-month period. It is intended to generate interest and discussion, showing the most improved athletes as they climb the rankings. Athletes' performances will be considered in all competitions from grass roots to elite international level so long as the competition is held in accordance with UKA/IAAF Rules. An athlete's score is measured according to scoring tables developed by Arnold Black and Colin Shields. While the scoring tables are initially based upon the principles of the IAAF Scoring Tables of Athletics, they have been amended to take account of current World and British rankings and to enable a comparison across all men's and women's events. The rankings score is the total of the athlete's five best result performances, which can be achieved across a range of events. For a guide to the scoring system, please see the PDF below. The Black-Shields Rankings cover all athletes qualified to represent Scotland. However, where a performance is wind assisted, a deduction of six points is made for every one metre per second of wind assistance. Where no wind reading has been recorded, the performance is treated for the results score as having a wind assistance of +3.0 m/s (i.e., an 18 points deduction). Hand Timed Performances Hand timed performances are not accepted for ranking scores for events of 200 metres or less. Combined Events Performances In the case of a Combined Events competition, the calculated score is based on the final score of the competition unless any of the individual event scores exceeds the combined events score. In this case the score of the individual events can be considered as a score for ranking. Therefore, from the same Combined Events competition the athletes can have either the score calculated using the final score of the competition or the scores of any of the individual events as scores, but not both. Indoor Performances Indoor performances are eligible for scoring. Five best performances An athlete can score across the undernoted events. However, an athlete's five best performances can only include a maximum of two wind assisted performances and/or two indoor performances. Three of the five performances must be non-wind aided, outdoor performances.
