Bank of Scotland Countdown Camps

Bank of Scotland Countdown Camps

scottishathletics’ announced its Bank of Scotland Countdown Camp participants this year with 82 coaches and over 100 athletes from across Scotland being named as part of the development programme aimed at the London 2012 Olympics.

Scotland head coach Laurier Primeau said: “Athletes selected for development are being named now, but will be reviewed in September or October. We want to recognise outstanding performances from 2009. Coaches spend countless hours developing talent and it’s important that their work is recognised. We’ve been transparent about the decision making process this year, outlining criteria for selection and more information about selection in presentations and videos on scottishathletics' website.”

Up and coming athletes names included are Callum Hawkins (Kilbarchan AAC), Emma Nutall (Edinburgh AC) and Hazel Ross (Kilbarchan AAC) as part of the line up in their respective events. Several of Scotland’s top coaches are listed to help ensure quality performance levels in Scotland.

Athletes must meet one or more of the following criteria to be considered for selection: Power of 10 U23 top ten ranking, Power of 10 U20 top twenty ranking, Power of 10 U17 top thirty ranking or a wildcard designation, assigned by either a national event group manager (1 designation) or a regional manager (2 designations).

Coaches are selected on the basis of their athletes being selected, as long both the athlete and coach are based in Scotland full time. Athletes can be added to the development squad during the season if they achieve the 2010 age group Power of 10 standard in an outdoor competition. However, athletes can also be removed from the team if it is determined that they are uncommitted to training and the overall goals of the programme or if they are unwilling to follow scottishathletics’ code of conduct.

Bank of Scotland Countdown Camps are delivered in six regional areas including Highlands and Islands, Grampian, East, West, Central and Tayside and Fife between October and December each year, followed by a camp in March/April of the subsequent year. The recently named athletes see their next camp 1st May at Scotstoun in Glasgow.

Susan Rice, Managing Director of Lloyds Banking Group Scotland, said: “Bank of Scotland has been a long standing supporter of sport across Scotland and as part of our sponsorship programme for the next year, we are delighted to continue our support for scottishathletics. We are committed to helping develop young athletes right up to elite performer level, to achieve their dreams of winning medals at major championships. The Bank of Scotland Countdown Camps are an extremely effective way of identifying young talented athletes and then giving them the support and coaching that will be vital in their development."

Countdown Camps are for U17, U20 and U23 levels with the intention to focus on practical coach education and development towards the London 2012 Olympics.
