WEEKEND UPDATE TWO: WILLIAMS FIRST TO FULFIL COMMONWEALTH CRITERIA IN 2010
14th February 2010 Scottish Marathon champion Martin Williams (Tipton) is the first athlete to have achieved the full nomination criteria for selection onto the Scottish team for the Commonwealth Games in Delhi (October 2010), clocking 2:17:36 for the marathon in Seville this morning (Sunday 14 February) – over a minute inside the required standard (2:19.00). Williams, who finished 24th in last April's Flora London Marathon in 2:23.02, clocked his first Commonwealth Games qualifier of 2:18:24 for victory in the Edinburgh Marathon in May 2009 (pictured). The scottishathletics Commonwealth Games selection policy states that one qualification mark is required between 25 April 2009 and 30 June 2010, and if a standard is achieved in 2009 then supportive evidence is required in 2010 from either a half marathon or 10k event. Williams now requires neither having achieved the full marathon standard for the second time in 12 months.
