Following the successful launch of specialist endurance and middle-distance squads, and the impending launch of a specialist sprint squad mentored by legendary former athletes and coaches Liz McColgan, Tommy Boyle and Alan Wells respectively, a specialist hammer throwing squad has now been formed, under the tutelage of Hammer guru Alan Bertram. Athletes for all squads will be individually selected from those who are judged to have the highest potential to benefit from the support provided. The squads will serve to develop athletes between the regional and national squads and will concentrate on supporting the growth of Scotland's next group of elite international athletes across several event groups, with a major competition focus stretching from 2008 to 2014 and beyond. An unprecedented number of Scottish Hammer Throwers now appear in the UK Rankings for 2006. The main contributory factor for this is the undoubted success of the Hammer Grand Prix System, which has now been running for two years. In the evaluation attached below, information is provided based on the Grand Prix and statistics are presented with a view to demonstrating the overall hammer-throwing picture.
