Big fields for ‘Night of the 10Ks’

Tuesday 25th April 2017

Start-lists and timetable

Crownpoint in Glasgow stages the next Scottish National Championship event for 2017 this Friday evening – as the Glasgow Athletics Association host their ‘Night of the 10Ks’ Miler Meet.

And we’re delighted that running 10,000m on the track, with the likes of Lachie Stewart and Liz Lynch having supplied a strong heritage, is once again proving popular.

Over the past three years, the GAA Meet has hosted Scottish Champs in this distance and that’s led to a real revival with over 80 entries for Friday’s races.

The previous record was 60 entries so it’s great to see the way the endurance community in Scotland has backed this event.

Four races over the 25-lap distance are scheduled in total, with the first at 6.15pm, and there can be little argument that the GAA Miler Meet formats are proving a great template for an ‘Event Specific’ approach for athletics in Scotland and scottishathletics supports those principles (with the GAA Sprint Gala coming up, too).

The 2016 Women’s 10,000m medallists with Callum and Derek Hawkins

Wetton and Mackay land 2016 10,000m titles

National XC silver medallist, Kris Jones of Dundee Hawkhill, is among the top-ranked men with the start-lists also including the likes of Michael Christoforou, Scott Stirling, Calum McKenzie and Will Mackay.

The Women’s medals could be contested by the likes of Morag MacLarty, Annabel Simpson, Halina Rees, Nikki Gibson, Michelle Sandison and Suzanne Gilmour.  Masters championship medals are on offer on Friday from V35 upwards (in five-year age bands).

There is also a £200 ‘prize pot’ available to the overall fastest – IF they break the following target times:

Men: 31.00. Women: 35.30

Please come along and support athletes and coaches on Friday as we seek to generate the kind of atmosphere which helps bring PB performances and raises the overall standards for 10,000m in Scotland.
